As Shad Olson Predicted: Coronavirus Infects Word Financial Markets as Uncertainty Grips Wall Street, Forces Suspension of Shenzhen and Shanghai Markets in China.
–Shad Olson breaks down the financial impacts of the growing coronavirus epidemic as the Dow is down 550 at the opening bell before riding a rollercoaster into the close, finishing down 429 points as airline, hotel, gasoline and casino gaming stocks dragged the broader market into negative territory for the young 2020 year. FANG stocks rebounding slightly.
–Chinese officials announce a two day emergency suspension of market trade, extending the Lunar New Year holiday by another two days in hopes of stabilizing market jitters. It won’t matter. Indices will be in freefall whenever trade resumes and Chinese airline and hotel stocks among others are going to take a swan dive.
–Those effects will ripple back and forth through Wall Street as money managers attempt to determine short term shelter, with equities leap frogging each other down the ladder to more comfortable levels. They may very well have intentionally infected the Trump economic boom with a terminal disease.
–If you were going to commit bioweapons genocide against the human race, releasing an engineered cross-species superbug in a crowded Chinese street market would be close to the perfect crime. Ease of replication. Plausible deniability. And you’d need a scanning electron microscope and the wherewithal to use it to ever deduce the forensic truth.
–Coronavirus infection rate makes it nearly as contagious as chickenpox but with as long as a 14-day asymptomatic incubation period, two characteristics that spell very difficult prospects for containment. Still too early to tell what awaits as virus takes hold in mainland China, despite quarantines, travel bans, etc.
–Mainstream media three years late on Puerto Rico disaster relief aid scandal. Shad Olson revisits his 2017-2018 coverage of the Tropical Storm Maria cwhere he revealed aerial photos showing palettes of water and other disaster supplies dumped in fields and left undistributed by Puerto Rican officials in order to paint Trump as a compassionless racist who deprived Puerto Rico of vital supplies.
